Location: Main Gallery, 401 S. Balsam St.

This collection of vintage historic imagery focuses upon the pride of Washington State—Mount Rainier National Park, which was established as the nation’s fifth national park in 1899.  Through images and words, the exhibit explores the natural beauty, the human involvement, and the physical challenges of the Cascade Range’s highest peak, which towers at 14,411 feet above sea level.  The exhibit’s memorabilia, dating from the 1850s to the 1940s, includes pre-park engravings, black & white silver gelatin photographs, hand-tinted photographic prints, colorful tourist album lithographs, magazine illustrations, promotional literature, and postcards.  To paint the sweep of Rainier’s past, historical commentary accompanies the images. In addition to stunning imagery of the peak itself, the exhibit includes pictures of hikers with alpenstocks challenging the mountain’s rocks and glaciers, graceful waterfalls, old campgrounds, flowery meadows, and winter scenes.
