Dennis will be discussing Women Philosophers of the Early Modern Period edited by Margaret Atherton. This is a short collection of some of the philosophical writings of seven women from the 17th century.
Some of it is correspondence with famous philosophers like Locke, Descartes, and Leibniz. But others, like Cavendish, wrote their own original philosophical books and published under their own names.
Here are seven women philosophers who are criticizing Descartes’s dualism and providing their own metaphysical systems such as monism – the idea that the mind is of the same kind of substance as body.
