A concept cooked up in 1994 brought potatoes out of the kitchen, and into… the local museum.
The Adam East Museum & Art Center (now the Moses Lake Museum & Art Center) looked at Grant County’s chief agricultural product, and asked the question, “can potatoes be art?” Local artists answered and
Baked, Mashed or Fried,
an annual potato themed art exhibition was born.
By the show’s fourth year, visitors from as far as Seattle and Ocean Shores were showing up for the opening reception of the state’s most “spud-tacular,” and frankly odd, art competition. Over the show’s decade long run, artists schemed all year how to outdo each other and win the coveted “Golden Potato” Award.
In 2018, Moses Lake Museum & Art Center marks it’s 60th anniversary with the show’s reboot,
Reheated: Baked, Mashed or Fried
, on view October 12 - November 9. Over the course of the exhibition, the museum will explore Washington State’s agricultural prowess (it claims the world’s highest potato yield per acre!), the potato in art and culture, and host several potato-themed programs and family activities.
