Instructor: E. Hank Buchmann
Limit: 15 (5 minimum)

Learning the value of self-expression using the avenue of poetry. Students will learn how to unlock that often buried voice, waiting for permission to escape. Poetry can teach us how to be individuals, and express in original words our bravery, our passions and our fears. Topics to be covered include:

• How to get start: “One true sentence.”
• Using the “Salad Bar of Senses.”
• Letting the poem write itself.
• The many ways your poems can speak.
• Building confidence.
• Understanding the uniqueness of “I.”
• Taking a poet to lunch.
• The prose-letter poem.

Instructor will use verbal instruction as well as source material from books, photographs, movies, and music, with special emphasis on in-class writing exercises.

E. Hank Buchmann has taught poetry in countless middle-school and high school classrooms and college settings as well as published seven novels, three poetry collections, and numerous poems in a variety of venues.
